Age friendly Aotearoa New Zealand Toolkit

The Office for Seniors has created the Age friendly Aotearoa New Zealand toolkit to assist local bodies and community groups wanting to know more about how to make their city, town or community more age friendly. The toolkit is based on the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) Age friendly Cities and Communities model and includes case studies of age friendly work from some of New Zealand’s cities, towns and communities, as well as some international examples.

The toolkit is a starting point for understanding more about age friendly approaches, and how to go about creating more age friendly cities, towns and communities. It includes links to other useful resources for those interested in progressing their age friendly ideas. You will also find a list people you can contact for more guidance. These people have experience and expertise in age friendly work and have agreed to share their details so that they can help others interested in making their communities more age friendly.

To develop this toolkit, we spoke with some local bodies and community organisations to understand what should be included.

As a living document, the toolkit will be reviewed and updated periodically so that it remains up to date. If you have feedback for us about what you’d like to see included in the future, please get in touch with us by email at
