Health Ageing Strategy Underway

The Healthy Ageing Strategy sets the strategic direction for the health and wellbeing of older people for the next ten years.

The Healthy Ageing Strategy was launched by the Associate Minister of Health in December 2016.  Its vision is that “older people live well, age well and have a respectful end of life in age-friendly communities.”

The priority was to  develop an implementation plan on how the Strategy’s actions will  be rolled out over the first two years.  The implementation plan started on the 7th of July 2017.

There are five focus areas:

  • Ageing well
  • Acute and restorative care
  • Living well with long term conditions
  • Supporting people with high and complex needs
  • Respectful end of life.

Achieving the vision and goals set out in the Healthy Ageing Strategy requires the commitment and participation of many people working across the health and social system. This is in partnership with NGOs, communities, older people and their families and whanau.

The video below features some of these people talking about what the Strategy means for them, and their involvement in making it happen.
